It’s easy to buy a kite at the store but making a kite is more fun. Create a kite by using dowels to make a frame and gluing it on paper. Make your own kite and enjoy hours of fun with friends and family.

There’s no need to buy an expensive kite when you can create one. Making a kite is a simple project that even those with no prior experience will find it easy.

How to Create a Kite

Required Tools and Materials

Kite
Ribbons
2 dowel rods
Construction paper (stiff)
Ruler
Strong string
Glue
Knives
Scissors

Step 1

Cut the dowel into parts, one 16 inches long and the other 24 inches. Mark the 16” at the halfway stage and the 24” at the third of the way (use the ruler).

Step 2

Set the rods at right angles. Put one over the other (the marked spots should touch).

Step 3

Fasten the rods with a string. Tie and cut off the excess string.

Step 4

Use the knife to make notches at the rods’ ends.

Step 5

Continue making a kite by putting strings at the notch. Wrap it around the rod’s top. Draw the string around the frame’s edge. Fit them at the notch on the rods.

Step 6

Go back to the frame top. Tie the string’s ends tight.

Step 7

Put the string on a piece of construction paper. Cut the paper along the frame you made. When cutting along the strings, half an inch excess is ideal.

Step 8

Put glue at the edges of the paper. Fold it so it’s fastened within the frame. The fold should also enclose the string.

Step 9

You’re almost done making a kite. Tie some string on the short rod.
Make the strings longer than the rod. Tie strings on the long rods.

Step 10

Grab the two strings. Locate the point where they overlap. Fasten them with a string.

Step 11

The final step is to create the ribbons. Fasten the ribbons at the kite’s bottom using the glue.

How to Make a Box Kite

Required Tools and Materials

4 wood dowels (36 inches)
4 wood dowels (14 inches)
Twine
Pencil
Hand held saw
Masking tape
Plastic wrap

Step 1

Make notches at the end of the dowel using the hand saw.

Step 2

The next step to making a kite is to cross the 14” dowels (an X shape). Put masking tape at the intersecting point. Wrap it with twine. Do the same with the remaining 14” dowels.

Step 3

Put one of the Xs eight inches away from the bottom of the 36” dowel. Apply masking tape and twine. Put the three dowels at the 8” point, also to the X’s end point.

Step 4

8 inches from the other end of the 36” dowel, link the second X. Apply masking tape and twine. You’ll have a box with a couple of Xs in it.

Step 5

Put plastic wrap at the bottom and top 8 inches at the sides. Keep the 14” top open. Leave the middle 20” also open. Put masking tape on the plastic wrap.

Step 6

Use scissors to make holes in the masking tape. The hole should be at the point where the dowel joins the X dowels. Tie it.

Making a kite is a simple process, something even kids can do with their parents. The abovementioned methods should work regardless of the kite size.
